Goats
We use Boer goats in our field roatations. Once a crop is done we encircle it with electric netting and put the goats on it. The goats eat down the leftover crop. This makes it much easier on the tractor and less work for the farmer.
We also have two Nubian goats, M&M (Milking Mama) and Skittles. They are super sweet and will kid in late April 2010. We are excited to be milking again to have our own fresh milk.
In the winter the goats enjoy eating the winter rye and crimson clover cover crops. They keep the cover crop under control in addition to adding their "goat berries" to the soil.
The goats are sold for pets and meat. (Brenna tries to sell all the goats for pets.)
What is so special about chevon (goat meat)? Chevon is the lowest in fat, highest in protein of any meat. Many people have digestive problems that require a careful diet. The molecular structure of chevon is different than that of other meats. Therefore, chevon digests more easily. It is also a low fat, good tasting alternative to chicken or fish. The Boer influence changes the taste of the meat to a milder, more veal-like flavor.
Spanish. A favorite Momma goat.
